  6. One of the main resons for my changing Interchess from shareware to freeware
  7. was the number of outstanding, insoluable issues which make it unsaleable.  If
  8. its free nobody can complain about the fact that it doesn't work in all cases.

  10. This document details the problems that I have encountered and in all cases
  11. the solution is somewhat irregular and in many cases not suitable to everyones
  12. taste.

  16. ISSUE 1
  17. =======
  18. Because of the graphical nature of the user interface and the way in
  19. which Visual Basic compensates for the user changing the font size in the
  20. display properties control panel, (it simply scales the window and all it's
  21. controls), if you do not have the font size set to Small Fonts, (Normal - 96
  22. dpi), all the window graphics will appear to be too small and in the case of
  23. the main chess board, the window will not fit on the screen at 800x600.
  24. This is a major problem and I am as yet unable to fix it so the only solution
  25. is to prevent Interchess from running unless Windows font size is set to
  26. Small Fonts.  If it is not, you will be warned when you run Interchess and
  27. it will not run.

  29. If you get an error message refering you to this issue you can change the font
  30. size to Small Fonts by following these steps;
  31.     1) Click the Windows Start button and select Settings and then Control
  32.        Panel.
  33.     2) Double click on the Display control panel
  34.     3) In the Display Properties dialog selec the Settings tab and click the
  35.        Advanced... button
  36.     4) From the Font Size drop down list, select Small Fonts.
  37.     5) Click Ok and Ok again.  You will then be asked to reboot.

  39. The downside of changing from large fonts to small fonts is that all windows
  40. objects will appear a little smaller than before.  If you are running a 15"
  41. monitor at a high resolution, (1024x768), things may get to small to see, so
  42. can I take this oppertunity to suggest you change your screen resolution to
  43. 800x600, a much more sencible resoltion for a 15" monitor.  You can always
  44. make the fonts appear bigger by going to Appearance tab of the Display
  45. Properties dialog and changing the fonts for everything.

  47. I'm sorry this solution requires changing something you will have got used to
  48. but I cannot figure out another fix.

  51. ISSUE 2
  52. =======
  53. Load time can sometimes be a little long.  For various mail transport type
  54. reasons, it can sometimes take a hand full of seconds before there is
  55. any evidence that Interchess is launching.  This is caused by attempts to
  56. establish a connection with the Windows mail subsystem.  Basically, if it
  57. is a little slow to run, give it 30 seconds before desiding that it has
  58. crashed.
